Beefy’s History

The Boss of Beef began his first-class career in 1974 with Somerset, the same year Beefeater first opened its doors to the hungry public.

Sir Ian Botham, OBE is a former England Test cricketer and Test team captain, and current cricket commentator. Well-known by his nickname “Beefy”, he was a genuine all-rounder with 14 centuries and 383 wickets in Test cricket and still holds the record for the highest number of wickets taken by an England bowler to this day.

Sir Botham was not only the top English cricketer of the 1980s but a leading sports personality, familiar household name and yes, you guessed it - a big steak lover! So this summer he's swapping his cricket whites for chef whites, and joining us at Beefeater as our 'Boss of Beef'.

He has already been getting stuck into his role and spending time at the Whitbread Skills Academy – a training centre that thousands of our restaurant staff pass through for specialist training.

When playing against Hampshire and facing the West Indian fast bowler Andy Roberts in 1974, a bouncer hit him straight in the mouth. Unfazed, and minus a few teeth, he simply carried on and finished the match. Now that’s our kind of Boss!
